Summer Escape- Part III

Day 14- Saturday, July 6,
Camp: Lower Sunshine Reservoir, WY
Today was Yellowstone. I woke up early morning from the campsite and didn’t have coffee just quick breakfast and hit the road. The view was spectacular and I made it quickly to the gate of Yellowstone so I was in early morning and it was very very enjoyable, because there wasn’t big crowd, after a couple hours of enjoying around seeing buy some and reindeer and beautiful lakes and Kaiser people show up with became too busy too crowded so I simply drove all the way to Eastgate and made it to Cody and campsite. I am planning to pay another visit and again I will try to be as early as possible. There is significant difference between 7 AM and 9 AM, it’s still national park and it works like city park when it’s crowded but when it’s quiet you see the difference and you see the real us the view outside national Park between Eastgate and Cody is very very interesting and unique. It’s like high desert mountain desert with river. Most of that area is paid campground or paid picnic area, so I couldn’t find anything suitable for night camping.

Day 15- Sunday, July 7,
Shoshone National Forest FR-130 Lily Lake, WY
Today was very nice and surprising day. I was planning to stay my campsite but early morning I noticed there’s no shade there’s no tree and the weather was sunny so I realized I will be baking all day so I packed up and drove to Cody. Stop at Walmart got some few items I forgot to get yesterday and previous. Walmart was mostly water and some snacks and then I realized there is orange in front of Walmart and even though it was Sunday was open so I stopped by and basically gave my used engine oil for recycling, so I am lighter now, then I draw all the way to north of Cody in my research learned that there is a byway or scenic byway. It was Wyoming 296 I think and it was beautiful so I took that scenic byway. It’s filled with fantastic views I mean, these are some of the most spectacular views I have seen in my life, it was high looking at valley then we sent it to the valley it was I don’t remember the name someone’s forks have a look up for the name anyway and the Riverview everything was fantastic. Then I moved to this campsite it’s mountain Lake campsite and apparently it’s very wildlife active area, so they have these bare boxes first I found the little campsite between couple other campers it was in the shadow of trees was cooler so I stopped. I had my food then after short rest, we walked around to see what is around us and to see this beautiful lake and I realize there is this nice campsite on the other side so I decided this should be good campsite far away from other noises and other campers and very nice view. It’s basically up looking at the lake even the lake is behind trees, but you can see and it has very nice vibe so after a few back-and-forth and waiting for visitors to leave, I draw here and now we stopped to. I had like one bar of network coverage in previous place but here there is no network coverage and probably it’s better because one bar isn’t very useful to and looking at the map. I learned that this is actually another entrance for Yellowstone so now I have new nicer plan for visiting Yellowstone. I had my first drive in Yellowstone yesterday. I am planning to do another drive in Yellowstone probably tomorrow and this time I will go from Northeast to West, I can see wildlife early morning and then another day from West Yellowstone early morning again just come in and drive all the way to South so I can basically visit Teton national Park. Weather is nice it is supposed to get warmer like 80, which is fantastic for outdoor but with my black fabric topper under the sun it goes up to like hundred degrees but I think I’ll be fine and it looks like I can follow the plan.

And the history:

Day 16- Monday, July 7,
Camp: Red Canyon Creek, MT
Today we woke up in Lily Lake camp, very crisp and Beautiful morning and we had a quick breakfast and then we roll all the way to Yellowstone. The West entrance was beautiful not crowded at all and I think more beautiful than other entrances I have seen after a couple up-and-down we entered the basin and so we started seeing herd of bison or Buffalo there were a lot of them just walking around eating moving laying on the ground and so on so it was beautiful side to see this early morning. It wasn’t very busy and everyone was nice except a few people they were trying to capture photo but they didn’t want to stop and didn’t want to drive either, so they simply just colliding slowly on the highway so everyone just try to pass him but other than that everyone was nice and around 10. I noticed the increasing crowd so we simply throw all the way through Yellowstone to western entrance because it was Monday. I also received many different emails and call and calls, so first I panic because I lost my Internet connection and after back-and-forth. Finally I got Internet connection back and I think I was able to reply everyone during the panic and also because it was warm day. I checked another creek I don’t remember the name, but it was beautiful creek few miles from here, similar management system similar campsites, a little larger river, then return back to parking spot near West Yellowstone Internet, connection double check everything and threw back to red Canyon this time red Canyon is not super busy so I was able to find a better campsite campsite number four villa three shades around was cooler than others. I also use the emergency blanket as reflector to reduce the heat inside camper and I noticed I have very weak Internet connection. It’s not very good but every now and then it comes and goes and it’s useful so in case someone calls me or emails me I will not miss him that’s good. Next few days will be warmer. My plan is to stay here for at least one more day if it is not crowded and busy, extremely hot to campsites at least they have trees here and then drive one more time inside Yellowstone.

Day 17- Tuesday, July 9,
Camp: Red Canyon Creek, MT
Today was a relaxation day without any movement I spent time in camper, washing, cleaning, having rest and reviewing my course it was also a little warmer than usual, so we barely touched the limit of uncomfortable. I have like one sometimes two bars of Internet connection it’s not strong and reliable, but it is still useful, I also use emergency blanket on top of top to reduce the temperature and it works fine. Twila is a little uncomfortable with this temperature, but I think she’s learning to manage it. She’s looking for shadows shades of trees, shades of car had to be honest outside is in my opinion comfortable yeah visitors today campers moving up and down so it was more active than yesterday. Our last walk early evening just around sunset was big surprise because I just saw a snake close to our camp. I have to identify this species but I think it was one of those young poisonous snakes look like wiper to me but have a look into the specifics and make sure and I think the snake is still hanging around so tomorrow I’ll be more careful while walking especially when I let out should be supervised now I will not have big move tomorrow as well. I will spend early morning working on my course and afternoon because the weather is hotter probably will drive to somewhere nearby. Maybe we can visit this earthquake lake around hottest time of the day we are actually inside the car and using air conditioning and then I will return here and they have tomorrow will be big move back inside Yellowstone and arriving all the way down.
Note: probably Western Terrestrial Garter Snake

Day 18- Wednesday, July 10,
Camp: Red Canyon Creek, MT
A day of rest- we read out the hot day. It wasn’t extreme hot I was around 83 which is a good weather, but it is considered hot for here and especially inside car. Basically the day was nice and cool morning then hot afternoon then storm of flies, they were literally attacking us, and especially Twyla, and then mosquitoes and finally everything cooled down at the end of the day at the big of temperature. We just went inside car and turned AC on. I also did some cleaning and preparing for the next leg of this journey.

Day 19- Thursday, July 11,
Camp: Caribou Targhee NF, ID
We woke up early morning and we had very quick breakfast hoping we can make it to Yellowstone before the crowd and I think it was fine. We wrapped up everything by 6 AM and we hit the road we were in West Yellowstone around 7 AM, but I realized even though there’s no big crowd there are a lot of people rushing into Yellowstone and, in the last minute, I decided it will not be very fun to go inside Yellowstone with this crowd, people literally ignoring red light just to get in so I changed the plan and we drove down to Idaho and I made it to Kari Turkey national Forest campsite. Another thing I noticed was the temperature, I didn’t realize my previous campsite was one of the coolest places I can be everywhere else was hot. I mean a lot of places around here it would go up to 97° so it was another reason for making this camp. It was much cooler than other places I’m assuming but still we went up all the way to 88° and late afternoon we didn’t have enough shade. It is supposed to be a few more hot days and I am assuming it’s over around here for next couple of weeks because this is July so probably the best idea would be just to drive late afternoon to this campsites, and take advantage of cars AC, today I planned to drive inside Teton national park and then we will likely drive down to Colorado. It looks like high mountains of Colorado are cooler these days so that will be our next step and hopefully we can spend a week or two in Colorado.

DIY ultralight pyramid tent for 2+ or 1+dog or 1+ bike

This is my new DIY project. I have been making tents for last 5 years and I've tried different types. When I started backpacking I purchased a double wall, fully enclosed tent  (so called ultralight tent; market crap).  Most people don't really need these tents and they are not ultralight at all. I switched to a tarp when I started thru-hiking and I fell in love with it's simplicity. Tarp is fantastic. I tried copying zpacks solo tents then. It is a great design.   This time I was looking for a larger tent that can fit my dog as well and it's not as miserable looking as a tarp (people think you are broken!). I always resisted the idea of using a pyramid tent but after a lot of thoughts I settled down with a pyramid tent and I must confess this design offers fantastic features. Here how I did it.   Materials: I ordered all materials from:  https://ripstopbytheroll.com/   but I have used https://www.questoutfitters.com/ in the past and I enjoyed doing ...

New Wood Stove

Finally pulled the trigger and got the wood stove. Although it is not as small and as cheap as many other options, and there are many hassles, I like the aesthetic of it and it also gives me an option of using my MSR stove safely. I have been heating my winter journeys with MSR and cracked window and CO detector, but this sounds safer and more flexible. I spent a day next to pond and build the basic frame and tested the heater. The first impression was good! This is not mounted, it is just a test

Looking for winter in Utah, we found it in Texas

In previous years trips, I have always been stopped by a cold weather at one point, so I had to turn around at some point and head south. Although I have full clothes and sleeping system for very cold temperatures, but the main problem is that my comfort zone is very small and I can't move around a lot. This time I was focused on ideas to improve the cold weather comfort and test how far I can go. As a side note, I have learned that holidays are not good times to travel to places with good weather, nevertheless Christmas is one of those times that I will be miserable staying home. I always have very nice neighbors and friends and their attempt to make sure I am not feeling lonely makes me feel pathetic. So it is the best time to leave the town and go somewhere. If they ask why, I would say I am missing the snow. And if they say, well, you can just drive a shorter distance to the north and see the snow, I would say I miss the desert. And it is true, I miss snow and desert. The magic...
